This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
